On 19 May, OLPC president Chuck Kane said that an early summer G1G1
program in Europe is possible. Adam Holt suggested on 28 May that we
start off by assuming "totally arbitrarily" that the 4 most populous EU
countries would be included (DE, UK, FR, IT).
If those four countries are included, OLPC will need keyboard layouts for
each such country (or a decision that we'd make a "unified European
keyboard" or use the "US International keyboard" or something like that).
It would also be smart to assume that the US and Canada would be included
(thus Canadian and French Canadian keyboard bugs should be fixed). In
addition, since we are supporting several Spanish speaking countries,
Spain ifself should be included.
This is a collector bug for information about:
* What keyboards are needed
* Status of the work to create and support them
Apparently, up to four places need updating to make a keyboard:
* The printed silkscreen on the keys
* The KA tag in the manufacturing info, used by OFW
* The console keymap (kbd package)
* The X Window System keymap (xkeyboard-config package)
My initial survey of existing tickets showed these relevant tickets:
* #6633 - Updated xkeyboard-config package for fr and it layouts
* #6102 - French/Canada Localization not complete
* #5841 - es.map is broken for XO keyboards
* #3565 - Urdu, French, and Cyrillic Laptops don't go into their language
In addition, these tickets are relevant if we're going to have lots of
customers customizing their keymaps (e.g. as they move around Europe):
* #3912 - X11 should get keep its keyboard layout across upgrades.
* #4121 - Implement proper extensible keyboard description system.
* #6942 - changing keyboard layout requires editing a text file as root
We do not currently appear to have any keyboard layouts for DE or UK.
