 Well, one obvious alternate codepoint is "<".  However, that's a dirty
 hack.  The correct solution is to install the math fonts.

 This expression _does_ render properly, if not beautifully, in my FF2 on
 Gentoo, so that codepoint is present in one or another of the standard
 fonts.
