 For what it's worth, this ticket might be made obsolete by future
 scalability enhancements to the Neighborhood view.  More specifically,
 since we'll probably only be showing a small subset of the available
 neighborhood in many cases, the model for displaying results may be to
 have non-matches slide outward, off-screen, while matches slide inward,
 on-screen, so that only matches of the current search/filter appear in the
 view at all.

 The primary reason we avoided this treatment (thus opting for the grayed
 out effect) early on was because proper implementation really begs for the
 transition to be at least coarsely animated, to maintain spacial
 continuity.
