 The presence service isn't where our error is coming from, which is why
 the patch doesn't help.

 The presence service log actually seems to say the join succeeded.  The
 activity log doesn't.  One of the places our join failure in the activity
 log is coming from is sugar/activity/activity.py:_internal_joined_cb().
