Comment(by mikus):

 Despite the changed (summary) Title, I still think an option of "no scan
 at all" would be useful in some situations.

 If a scan is done, I suggest the filename ought to be  (optionally?)
 visible when the device's content is listed.

 Eben's suggestion of including the file's parent directory in the metadata
 is helpful.

 With the current implementation, might scanning occur every time the XO
 comes out of suspend?
