 When starting up update.1-708 inside a Qemu emulator (0.9.1-ubuntu1 from
 Hardy, no kqemu module) Sugar crashes during startup.

 According to the logs, we are dying on hardwaremanager.py line 88, which
 attempts to use the soundcard, in a block conditional on _not_ being
 in_emulator. This check is based on SUGAR_EMULATOR=yes - which is not
 getting set.

 Setting this in .xsession fixes it.

 Why is it unset?
