I feel like there's probably some other bug in trac for this, but let me
try to summarize the current status here.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Early_boot specifies the filesystem layout for a
three partition scheme: one partition holds /boot and /security, the next
holds the "OS" (/), and the third holds /home. We even agreed on the
sizes of these partitions, although I forget the exact numbers we decided
on.
I'm in the process of adding boot support from partitions to olpcrd. The
step after that would be to extend the build tools to generate partitioned
images, and images that update only the / partition. (olpcrd would have
to notice when it was being booted from a kernel/ramdisk in /boot that
doesn't match what's in / and update /boot appropriately.) Then olpc-
update would have to be taught the correct steps to update partitioned
filesystems.
