 I've logged that the following is happening in cases where this failure
 occurs:

 SD card is inserted and appears as /dev/mmcblk0

 In my case I have 1 partition (/dev/mmcblk0p1) that gets mounted

 Upon suspend/resume, the device gets rediscovered as /dev/mmcblk1. (In
 cases where the failure does not occur, the device is still at
 /dev/mmcblk0).

 At this point, the partition table is still OK as /dev/mmcblk1p1 gets
 mounted, but running fdisk on /dev/mmcblk1 shows that it has been
 destroyed, so the corruption is happening sometime after or during the
 mount process.
