while making the laptop affordable to the less well off.

all) of the donors wanted a laptop, and to also help the project. Don't
forget that it's a 200USD edu. computing device plus 200USD tax-deductible
donation.
From the first G1G1 initiative, it's clear there were many people who
expected to receive (and would have been better served by) a desktop-
metaphor laptop computer. This observation leads us to conclude thet
efforts to make the XO perform more like a desktop-metaphor computer would
be welcomed.
However, such efforts would necessarily come at the expense of making the
XO better suited as an educational device for the sparse-infrastructure
environment envisioned prior to the G1G1 initiative.
I agree with Albert that trying to sell the XO as 'just a laptop' at a
G1G1 price point of $400 is likely to be less effective in the current
market. It fails to promote the XO for the strengths of the original
design. Low power is nice, mesh is nice, water resistant is nice, but the
competition will exclude these costly features and instead include higher
power (and more power hunrgy) processors, better WiFi support, better
broadband application support, etc. for the same price.)
The two goals are in fundamental conflict. The options are to abandon one
or the other objective, or form two seperate teams with individual goals
to address the individual program needs.
However, if the decision is made to abandon the "desktop-metaphor laptop
computer" objective, but still use the "educational device" as a fund
raising focus, a logistics solution will still be necessary.
