New description:

The real issue is that there is no way to back up a user's data if the OS
is borked sans developer key. If the autoreinstallation image's backup
features were incorporated in offline upgrade, that would solve a lot of
 headaches.

Comment:

 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Olpc-update#USB_upgrade

You can also boot from the ext2 build on an SD card as a recovery
 mechanism.

Finally, 8.2 will have better backup/restore functionality, so the
preferred solution then will be reflash+restore.

Please don't use the autoreinstallation key. It has past its "use by"
 date.

I think this bug would be answered with better documentation of how to use
an external SD card to backup/restore a user's home directory and/or keys.
