#7160: more graceful alternate sugar boot failure

Currently, a failed alternate boot only displays "boot failed", without
providing any descriptive information. Did the boot fail because there is
something wrong in the code, or did it fail because (for example) there is
no alternate image? Knowing that an alternate boot failed for lack of
alternate image is useful, especially for testing/repair purposes (instead
of needing to guess - "is this key not working properly or was this
 machine reflashed?").
