 I don't know how it's related (if I did, I would have mentioned it).  I do
 know it's unusual, seems incorrect (for two programs to appear in w's
 output as being on the same terminal), and if one cat .  I apologize for
 the distraction, as you seem to be confident it's not related.

 Because the second terminal seemed to share a tty and interact with X, not
 the first.  After more testing I don't believe this to the case.  Sorry
 for the impulsive and irrelevant information.
