Comment:

 That approach was completely wrong and I think I have it working now.

 Attaching a kernel that you can use for testing this. Point
 /versions/boot/current/vmlinuz to this, than do a ln -s
 /lib/modules/2.6.25-<buildid> /lib/modules/2.6.25.11 so that the modules
 get picked up at boot.

 You can echo 9 to /proc/.../printk to see "LID OPENED" and "LID CLOSED"
 messages from the kernel.

 Let me know how your testing works out and I'll commit to testing kernel
 when ready.
