Comment(by cscott):

 The easiest way to test this is to (a) start with a machine with pretty
 boot enabled, (b) from a root shell, 'mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf
 /etc/X11/xorg.conf.DISABLED', (c) reboot.  You should get a console, even
 though X has failed to start.  Move the xorg.conf symlink back to fixup
 your system afterward.
