Comment(by bert):

 Etoys drawing to the screen uses XShmPutImage(). Switching the drawing
 code to XPutImage() fixes the gribblies (remove the -xshm option in
 /usr/bin/etoys).

 Also, in case this is relevant - the code creating the cursor is in
 display_ioSetCursorARGB():
