Comment:

 I'm a little unhappy with the catch all but I guess it's fine in this
 case.

 Use log.error to log the connection errors, for a couple of reason. 1 You
 are using a catch all which means that if there is a syntax error in the
 code, you will hide that trace in the debug logs. 2 We want to see the
 connection errors that happen in the field (debug is off by default).

 Please request a string freeze exception and make sure the strings are
 reviewed by Eben before checking in. Also please provide a testcase.
