Comment:

 This is the kind of thing that confuses people, particularly with respect
 to collaboration, which has enough problems when we don't expose
 functionality that will obviously make things look broken.  We already
 render the icons appropriately when people are offline, so I imagine this
 isn't too hard to fix.
