 The palette disappears as soon as the "Register" option is selected.  We
 need feedback apart from the palette.  We should use a non-modal alert for
 success and failure cases, as mentioned above.  We should also adjust the
 contents of the palette after successful registration.  One option is to
 remove the "Register" option.  Another is to change it to "Unregister".
 We could also change it to "Registering..." when clicked on, in case the
 registration process takes some noticeable length of time (since we
 otherwise only have feedback on success/fail).
