 The scale of this fix needs to be evaluated, and weighed against the other
 features already pending or deferred for the 8.2 release.

 I suggest that the first step is to involve our QA dept in testing: what
 is our current behavior?  Has recovery based on current behavior been
 documented?  Is it sufficient for our short-term needs?
