 open the control panel and enter a nick name in the about_me section. Then
 cancel 'x' the operation. open the about_me section again. The nick name
 should not have changed.

 As a second test please try to set a non-ascii nickname using the command
 line interface e.g.
  - sugar-control-panel -s nick niño
 No error should occur and after restarting sugar the nickname should be
 displayed correctly in the UI.
