Comment:

 Good catch - this was introduced with the non-ascii nick fix #5613. We get
 TypeError exception “decoding Unicode is not supported” here when we set
 the nick from the gui - since the nick is in unicode format already. Will
 have a look what is best to do.

 Make this a blocker since this blocks the control panel feature.
