 Actually, my inclination is that the focus should always be placed within
 the search entry in the toolbar, so that one may immediately type a few
 characters to narrow down the list of activities, which should be faster
 than scrolling. (This is also consistent with the other views, though I
 could reconsider and always make an exception for the list views if use
 cases bore out that's more useful.)

 I certainly agree that focus behavior in general is atrocious,  between
 the lack of focus support in Hippo and our "abuse" of GTK toolbars, but I
 think those issues all belong in their own tickets.
