 Symlinks to blame.  Affected files:

 /etc/fedora-release -> olpc-release
 /sbin/halt -> reboot
 }}}
 In 656, /sbin/reboot points to /sbin/halt, so rsync temporarily has an
 infinite symlink loop, which confuses it.  And there is no /etc/olpc-
 release file at the time that /etc/fedora-release is rsynced (apparently)
 which also leads to sadness.

 Solution is probably just to break the links and copy the files, since
 they are small.
