Currently, the system is designed to generate /etc/sysconfig/network-
 scripts/ifcfg-eth0 ifcfg-eth1, for DHCP mode.

I modified these for "static IP" but they were over-written on the next
boot. Apparently, the scripts check for the existence of a file
/etc/sysconfig/olpc_net_config and if not there, copy over these same
files again. I do not see this file ever getting created. I have worked
 around the problem using:

 echo "# use static IP" > /etc/sysconfig/olpc_net_config

However, this may need to be fixed or documented for others.
