 I managed to fix the problem by not by replacing the alt key with the left
 hand key.

 L-Grab = 127
 Alt = Something in the 40s

 Run xmodmap in the terminal (not as root!). Open help with "xmodmap -h"
 and then it lists the different combinations to make.  I am a bit of a
 Linux noob, so I spent 20 minutes trying stuff - so I don't know what
 actually made it work.  Using -pp or something like that (see help) you
 can find the key scan tables.  I may have also needed to remove "Meta_L"
 from the "mod1" group, but that might have been a mistake.

 Anyway, this should fix the problem in the meantime by assigning the alt
 key to a useless task. -Michael http://theplaz.com
