 Just took a look at a trace of LAN activity while I booted the XO, and
 tried Browse (using 1594 + yum update; Q2D10).  The XO *did* ask DNS for
 the address of the jabber server (specified in sugar-control-panel), but
 then tried to contact that address directly, rather than through the proxy
 (result: no response).  But the XO did _NOT_ ask DNS for the IP address of
 the URL that I had entered in Browse.  Whatever blocks Browse, it is
 occurring *before* Browse actually tries to use the (in this case, LAN)
 connection.

 [Note:  I *have* specified to Browse (via about:config) that it is
 supposed to use a http_proxy.]
