 When you open a pdf, it is resumed with Read. A new Read activity used to
 appear in the journal, but this no longer happens (sorry, can't pinpoint
 when this stopped working).

 Looking at the Read log, I see an 'activity.__save__error.cb'. Disabling
 security, by 'rm /etc/olpc-security' doesn't fix it.
