Comment:

 do you use the script olpc-netstatus?

 it provides the following info:
 IP of all interfaces
 dns of any
 which telepathy
 which jabber you are connected to to
 what the configuration of your connection(school server/AP/link local)

 but still, this only gives the current status of your connectivity, and
 not what the connection is capable of.
 for example, it does not tell u whether you CAN connect to a jabber
 server, unless u are actually connected to it.

 generally though its a very good indicator of your connection.
 if the DNS it gives is valid, you most probably can ping.
 if your telepathy is salut, you CANNOT connect to jabber.

 However, if this still does not cover you requirement, i can make a
 network scanner/test script, which would try on all 3 channels, several
 stuff like pings, try to dhcp on both interfaces, try to connect to SS,
 some predefined APs, try to telnet on port 80 and so on.

 You should know that, although it can be done, it is very tricky to check
 whether you can connect to a school server, without actually connecting to
 it. The same with jabber etc. So a script that would make the above
 ok/fail test would take long time to complete.
