Comment:

 I turned the volume right down to nothing using the keyboard volume keys,
 verified that it was silent using "aplay
 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" (which previously played sound
 but now didn't), then did "halt", waited for it to halt, held the power
 button down for 4secs+ to make sure it was really off (all lights out),
 then switched on again, and it STILL played the switch-on sound (although
 it didn't play any sound once the OS had booted).  This is build 656,
 firmware Q2D07.
