 When the current XO is switched on, it plays a sound (apparently done by
 the firmware).  In some situations (libraries, sleeping families, etc) it
 is necessary to operate without sound.  I don't know if there's any way of
 disabling the switch-on sound, but if there is then I can't find where
 it's documented.
