Comment:

 I don't see how this can be related to the DS.

 I recommend to Erik to run the suspected processes in strace until finding
 the one executing unlink(). Then we'll know much more about the problem
 and we can reassign to whoever is responsible.

 The most likely processes are, in order: Record, Rainbow, Datastore, Shell
 service and Shell.
