 When poking around ~/.sugar after working on the datastore stuff, I
 noticed the data/ directory.  Looking in there, I see many downloaded
 copies of certain XOs (which I believe correspond to Axon and/or XoIRC,
 two activities I've installed multiple times) plus a 30MB (!) copy of the
 TuxPaint .xo, which I know for a fact I removed from the Journal.  All of
 the files are named with UID-like headers; some have .xo extensions, some
 have others.

 I suspect that these are files left over from Browse sessions.  Left
 unchecked, this could be another source of disk-full issues.
