Comment:

 Don't forget to test "update from USB image without wiping out all the
 user files" upgrades, too.  Write the upgrade instructions, and test them
 over and over on naive users, smoothing out every misunderstanding or
 wrong path taken.

 And:  If one user has upgraded their laptop to update.1, can they in turn
 pass on the update to another user?  Or are key parts (like the signatures
 on the pristine copy) discarded after installation?  cjb, want to write a
 pippy app that when shared with another laptop, offers to upgrade it to
 any OS release available on the current laptop?
