Comment(by daf):

 Tunnelling through SSH is complicated in several ways: we would need to
 create accounts for the kids somewhere, and we would need to somehow get
 Gabble to speak through an SSH connection.

 A simpler approach would be to have the Jabber server listen on a port
 that's unlikely to be blocked, such as 443.

 Not sure what priority this should be; I guess it depends on how likely it
 is that the kids encounter hostile network environments.
