Comment(by wad):

 I compared the logs on jabber.l.o and schoolserver.l.o.
 The differences are four:

 - different host names (not FQDN in the case of schoolserver)
   To have an FQDN we will have to set up DynDNS...

 - different admin user in ACL

 - ejabber_c2s on ports 5222 and 5223 is commented out on jabber.l.o

 - mod_ctlextra is enabled on jabber.l.o.   Adding this to schoolserver
 crashes the server on restart --- I haven't applied the mod_ctlextra
 patches, I'm instead using the collabora-supplied RPM packages.
