 What you're trying is indeed not possible. The easiest and recommended way
 to do this would be to upgrade to a joyride or update.1 build (if you have
 a developer key; if you don't you probably want to get one).

 The other way is a bit involved: you'll have to install packages manually.
 Best would be to get them from koji (the building system) directly:
 http://koji.fedoraproject.org, you would need gnome-vfs2, poppler and
 sugar-evince. Then get the latest version of Read as well (38)
