 I'm reluctant to directly re-use /home for this data because I think it
 will make it more difficult to become compatible with existing multi-user
 systems.

 Let's see how storing it underneath $HOME/isolation/1/ works out.

 Also, what was the permissions problem you mentioned in your last comment?
