 New operations to send read/write messages for files are broken somehow.
 The read_file method on the Activity never seems to get called (though
 *write_file* is called when restoring from the Journal).  It's got to be
 something very simple, but I'm not seeing it as I stare at the code.

 Failure is being seen on an Ubuntu machine running the Gutsy .deb
 packages.
