 But you see, the problem occurs with the Kingston stick fresh out of the
 box too.
 All formatted FAT by the manufacturer.

 And I did follow the directions in
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OS_images_for_USB_disks to the letter, which
 yields a stick that boots fine if I use the Sony stick instead of the
 Kingston.
