 Yes.  But files which are identical between versions are hardlinked under
 the covers.  Unfortunately, it is possible to write through the hard link
 to modify the "other" one.  rsync does the right thing when updating, so a
 new build always gets an appropriately pristine copy.

 Unionfs is the way to go long term.
