 python-alsaaudio
 provides a reasonable interface to communicate with ALSA from Python


 There really isnt anything else that one can use. Currently I had been
 using a combination of


 # os.system calls to amixer to set dc mode / bias / capture gain etc.
 # gstreamer to actually acquire samples


 both are perhaps not the best (and involve a fair amount of complexity)
 for doing something simple a acquiring a few samples from the ADC
