 The invasiveness of the patch isn't really an issue; if you're touching
 core net stuff, that's invasive enough that you'll need to come up w/ a
 good API.

 As Jim said, you're not going to get any sort of assurance in advance.
 The idea might be sound, but people will reserve the right to hate the
 implementation.  The best you'll get is "Sure, that idea doesn't sound
 *too* crazy.."
