Comment:

 As far as I can see there currently isn't a way to manually toggle color
 and b&w mode manually without affecting the backlight, however for some
 applications using the b&w mode with backlight on increases the
 readability quite a bit over the color mode. One use case are PDFs which
 are constructed out of scanned JPEG images, in the color mode the JPEG
 artefacts gets amplified by the bluring and they become very visible
 around the letters, while in b&w mode they look normal.
