 but i don't think we noticed the characters were highlighted (yesterday,
 while the group of us was looking at the result of your testing) until
 _after_ we had played with many/most of the affected laptops in order to
 see if we could get more phantom characters.  which means we had switched
 screens some more times, which would have caused the highlighting.

 also, if the character were to appear while switching _away_ from the
 neighborhood view, then it would be highlighted when you returned.

 in any case, we shouldn't spend time looking for possible sources of pre-
 highlighted characters, since they may easily have been highlighted after
 the fact.
