 this is likely a red herring.  once there are characters in the search box
 (whether due to real or phantom keypresses), they will be highlighted if
 you switch away from, and back to, the neighborhood screen.  so it's
 unlikely that the characters appeared highlighted in the first place --
 they were probably highlighted subsequently.
