 Any suggestions for an alternative?

 I hadn't anticipated this confusion, since the context is distinct
 (palettes are strictly mouse-driven).  Also, The check and x buttons map
 to enter and escape (perhaps even more directly than the game buttons),
 which relate conceptually to accept/cancel.  We extrapolated to
 connect/disconnect and on/off from there, intending to use these icons for
 turning a variety of devices on/off.

 So:

  * accept/cancel
  * on/off
  * connect/disconnect

 Right now these are using the same iconography, as they share a very high
 level similarity.  More distinct icons could be useful, if we can find
 some that are both distinct and meaningful.
