 Did ctl-alt-F2 (plus <enter>) to get to text console.  'pwd' showed the
 current directory as '/'.  The reason was that /root (the value stored in
 $HOME for user root) was defined as a symbolic link to /home/root -- but
 there was not any directory /home/root.

 Whatever software defines /root as a symbolic link, needs to make sure
 that there exists a real directory where that link points.

 [I've been using 'olpc-update' to install new builds.  Since that is
 supposed to leave /home untouched, I have no idea of when or why
 /home/root (if there ever was such a thing) wasn't there.]
