 Oh, also: knowing exactly *where* the memory error is happening would help
 a lot as well.  Bug #5805 seems to indicate a memory failure when we
 read() an entire file into memory in order to compute its hash; this
 probably has bad behavior if there are large files in the system (like,
 for instance, if the user has manually installed additional packages which
 include some very large files).  That's probably a bug I can fix easily.
