In the case of a school which is larger than the presence server is
capable of supporting at this time, we will need to partition the school
into "sections" which can be handled by a single presence server.

This can easily be done by the Identity Manager. While round-robbin would
suffice, it would leave students in the same classroom without the ability
 to collaborate.

I suggest that the Identity Manager take a file with serial numbers
divided into groups, and use this information to group laptops onto
presence servers in a more intelligent manner. For example, all the
students in the first and second grade could be on the same presence
server, with the third and fourth grades on a different server.

The actual presence servers could be run on virtualized servers on the
same machine, or on separate machines. The backup server could also be
distributed using this mechanism, although it may be preferable to
concentrate all backup on a single server.
