 i've been looking at the ohmd code.  i don't quite understand the
 invocation chain in ohm-plugin-display.c, but it looks to me as if there's
 a disagreement between okay_to_suspend() and reset_brightness() wrt to
 maintaining the user brightness level.  in reset_brightness(), it looks as
 if we'll set the user's brightness value to whatever the current value is,
 _unless_ it happens to match one of the AC, battery, or idle values.
 again, i don't fully understand the flow, but it's just something that
 looks odd.

 (how do most easily i turn on ohmd's debug output?)
